Homeopathic medicines can relieve side effects of cancer treatments.

A French oncologist  and homeopathic medical doctor at the University of Strasbourg in France, has been very successful in treating patients with homeopathic medicines for the various side effects of chemotherapy, surgery, hormone therapy, radiation, and targeted cancer therapies. Dr Jean-Lionel Bagot sees 4,000 cancer patients a year and has recently written the book ” Cancer & Homeopathy” which details the use of individualized homeopathic medicines to alleviate the side effects of conventional cancer treatments. This book has much to offer the patient who is suffering from the side effects of cancer treatment. Homeopathic medicines are not a substitute for chemotherapy or other conventional cancer treatments but homeopathic medicines can relieve suffering and make your needed cancer therapy tolerable. This is integrative medicine.

Often the homeopathic medicines which are taken daily for a few days will reduce the nausea, tiredness and sick feeling that may come from cancer treatments. Research has shown that Calendula Ointment applied right after radiation treatment is able to stop the skin from getting so red and sore. Also Traumeel Liquid drops diluted in water and held in the mouth like a mouthwash will stop the painful blisters that may form in the mouth from chemotherapy.

Zinc found low in pancreatic cancer..can it help your pancreatic cancer and be a biomarker?

Interesting research on the metal Zinc and Pancreatic cancer. The essential metal zinc has been shown to be low in the pancreatic cancer cells of  pancreatic cancer patients. This finding of a low zinc level was published in  the journal Cancer Biology and Therapy in August 2011 in a research study  by lead author,Leslie Costello, PhD a professor at the University of Maryland.

The researchers measured markedly lower levels of zinc in human pancreas tissue that had in it adenocarcinoma the most common form of pancreatic cancer. The zinc level in the cancer cells were lower no matter what stage and were compared with normal pancreas cell levels of zinc.

The researchers will look at a potential treatment of getting zinc into the pancreatic cancer cells which may destroy the pancreatic cancer cells.

The scientists further uncovered an important genetic factor that may eventually play into developing an early diagnostic tool. Malignant cells shut down a zinc transporting molecule called ZIP3, which is responsible for guiding zinc through the cell membrane and into the cells.

In essence, the researchers have discovered an early genetic/metabolic change in the development of pancreatic cancer. Cancer researchers previously did not know that the ZIP3 gene expression is lost in malignant pancreatic cells, resulting in lower zinc.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the
United States, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). There are
about 42,000 new cases annually in the United States, of which the NCI
estimates 35,000 will die.

Because Zinc is a popular  homeopathic medicine, Zincum metallicum ,which has traditionally been used when discharges or rashes  have been suppressed, I checked the homeopathic literature for relations to the pancreas. The homeopathic literature  on Zinc has many symptoms of heartburn, indigestion , burning in the stomach, nausea vomiting and hiccough. What is  further needed in clinical research is looking for suppression of symptoms. When taking the history of a patient with adenocarcinoma of pancreas  we can ask if any discharges or rashes had been suppressed with antihistamines, cortisone products, decongestants and even antibiotics. Maybe this suppression turned off the ZIP3 gene expression? How can the Zip3 gene be turned back on so pancreatic cells can process zinc? Would Zincum metallicum 12 C  change the Zip3 gene?

I welcome your comments. Jacquelyn Wilson, MD , DABIHM

Help for Sarah the crying baby.

My doctor’s work phone rang at 9pm Friday on a fall eve. It was Sarah’s mom calling me for help with her 1 year old toddler. I had seen Sarah once before in the office for a diaper rash which had resolved with oral homeopathic medical care.

Sarah’s mom said that Sarah had a stuffy cold that began today with a mild fever and that she was teething for the past 3 days.  But now she was crying non stop for the last hour, so her mom knew something was not right.

When I asked how she was during the day, she said Sarah  had been a little fussy with her stuffy  nose today but ate and drank only a little less than usual. She had 2 diapers of loose, green stools and one of just  normal urine.

Her mom said the only way she could stop Sarah from crying was to carry her around the house on her shoulder. When asked what the face of her child looked like, she said that Sarah’s face was red on only one cheek. I also asked what emotion Sarah displayed and she said anger. ..like a little hot head.

Being her medical doctor , here are my thoughts about Sarah’s condition: She probably had a cold virus  causing an upper respiratory infection plus she was teething giving her pain which made her cry and be angry. Her circulation is irregular from mild brain dysfunction probably from teeth pain and that is why one cheek is red and she is angry. From the cold, she could be at risk for pain and inflammation of her middle ear. Antibiotics are not indicated for an uncomplicated cold virus infection. If she got worse in any way she would need to be examined to rule out more serious problems.

What are the choices to help Sarah with her viral cold, fever, teething pain and anger if you do not want to give the strong chemical drug acetaminophen or an NSAID chemical or topical benzocaine gel for her sore gums?

As a family medical doctor  also trained in the use of homeopathic medicines, I advised her mother to put into Sarah’s mouth one small white lactose tablet of  the over the counter homeopathic medicine, Chamomilla in the 30 X potency. Her mom had a homeopathic home remedy kit and a bottle of the official homeopathic medicine, Chamomilla, was in it. Sarah immediately chewed up  the tablet since it tasted sweet. Within 3 minutes Sarah became calmer and soon stopped crying and was no longer angry. I advised her mom to repeat the Chamomilla tablet as necessary, even every 2 to 3 hours. And if it stopped working  or Sarah got worse to call me right back.  The rest of my Saturday night was calm; Sarah was sleeping and so was her mom.

Remember to use homeopathic Chamomilla 30 x or c tablets for people in pain who are angry, better being carried, often teething, have a stuffy nose, snore when asleep, after eating and drinking get heat and perspiration of the face, anger provokes the cough, and often red in the face, one cheek only. Chamomilla can do wonders for wheezing, cough and chest congestion too when the personality fits.

Understanding Natural Homeopathic First Aid Home Care.

People have been caring for themselves and their family for thousands of years by often using special healing plants which are called herbs. How to use these sustainable plants was passed down from  generation  to generation in families or outside of families by friends. Like thousands of others before you, studying how to use homeopathic medicines for home care and as part of first aid will be rewarding and helpful for your family and bring integrative medicine to your home.

Today there is a resurgence in healthcare to use more natural , safe, sustainable and affordable ways to treat  like using nutritional supplements including herbs  or homeopathic medicines for treatment.  Learning how to use the very safe homeopathic medicines which are classified as drugs in the US and so are regulated by the FDA makes sense to many. Homeopathic medicines  are made mainly from  plants, including most of the herbs plus minerals  and a few animal substances.

Why risk the possible side effects from chemical drugs and polluting the environment when there are alternatives like homeopathic medicines to try first. Of course in life threatening emergencies it is best to call 911 and see a doctor pronto for intensive emergency care. It is safe to add on homeopathic treatment while you are on your way to the emergency room or waiting for the ambulance.

Home care with homeopathic medicines is designed to relieve the pain and suffering of  minor illness, accidents and injuries which usually heal by themselves in 7 days or so. The homeopathic medicines do not interfere with chemical drugs or other care or diagnostics  that you may need. Do not throw out all the chemical drugs like antihistamines, pain medications and antacids because you may still need them.

What is the basis of Homeopathy, a therapeutic system of medicine? Homeopathic knowledge is based first on volunteer testing of a homeopathic medicine on a healthy person to find the detailed scope of action of the medicine on the mind and body. This testing using placebo and the real drug has been studied for 200 years and the knowledge is collected in homeopathic books and now computer databases.

Once knowing the detailed picture of what that specific  homeopathic medicine  is capable of doing, then the homeopathic drug is used in adequate doses to heal a a sick patient with the same pattern of illness as the detailed picture.  This is the  application of the Law of Similars or let likes be cured by likes. The goal of homeopathic care is to heal the body and mind  gently and safely using the minimum dose of medicine which can take care of several diagnoses at once.

Homeopathic medicines do not have side effects listed like regular drugs do because all are effects of the drug and contribute to describing the pattern that the drug produces. For instance, aspirin is know to cause tinnitus or ringing in the ears as a side effect in traditional medicine.  In homeopathic medicine, aspirin prepared in the homeopathic way may be used to treat a patient who has tinnitus which may have been caused by aspirin or something else.

There are over 1500 homeopathic medicines listed in homeopathic books. Homeopathic First aid and home care chooses  from 15-50 commonly used individual remedies in pellets, tablets or liquid given by mouth as needed.

Since single medicine homeopathy needs to be individualized , one needs to understand  when the first aid medicines are needed and that requires studying a book or online course since it is based more than just on a diagnosis. Most home care kits have a booklet to help with individualized homeopathic prescribing. If your kit does not, then you need a basic book on homeopathy like Homeopathic Medicine at Home by M Panos, and J Heimlich available at online bookstores. Homeopathic home remedy kits do not contain bandages, slings, eye washes, band aids or other first aid supplies that one also needs.

Having a homeopathic first aid kit at home will empower you to take care of yourself and family. Homeopathic medicines are available on prescription and over the counter worldwide  and always have Latin names. In the USA, homeopathic medicines are often referred to as remedies and are sold  mainly as over the counter medicines which do not require a prescription which makes them outstanding home care choices. You may buy  single homeopathic medicines or a combinations of homeopathic medicines as well as creams, ointments and sprays with indications for self care. There are also homeopathic medicine products for pets; ask your holistic vet.

Over 200 years ago in the USA , people started caring for their family with homeopathic medicines in home kits  mostly made from plants and minerals. Medical doctors, who often were scarce in the country, recommended these homeopathic home care kits be used  for self care.  Many medical doctors wrote self care homeopathic books to educate their patients about how to use these affordable homeopathic medicines which are  very safe and seem to last for years since expiration dates for these drugs are optional. Homeopathic drug manufacturers are regulated by the FDA but the homeopathic drugs are not reviewed by the FDA.

Currently these homeopathic home care first aid kits are sold worldwide  and have been used successfully by millions of people.

The Making and Use of Homeopathic Medicines in the USA

Homeopathic medicines have been made and used in the USA since the early 1800’s. The practice of homeopathy came to the USA in the 1800’s from Europe where Samuel Hahnemann, a medical doctor and chemist, developed this system  of healing by taking the medicines  himself and practicing on patients whom doctors had failed to help. This was the time when there were no antibiotics and people had poor hygiene and doctors were using blood letting and strong chemical drugs to treat people.

Encouraged that his  homeopathic care gave positive results in patients with acute infectious diseases whether bacterial or viral and also his success in treating patients with chronic disease, Hahnemann shared his knowledge of homeopathy through writing books.  The Organon and his Chronic Diseases  books are still being used online in homeopathic software databases accessed worldwide. Today homeopathic medicines are manufactured in many countries and their use is only exceeded by the use of allopathic drugs.  What sets apart homeopathic medicines  is that they are individualized, are affordable and are very gentle because of the small amount needed to stimulate the body to change.

It took Dr. Hahnemann decades to develop Homeopathy which is still evolving thanks to thousands of doctors and practitioners worldwide sharing their healing knowledge via the Internet. Homeopathic remedies  became official drugs in the USA in 1938 when they were included in our federal laws. The US Food and Drug Administration regulates the manufacturing in the US of all drugs including homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic drugs have been exempt from animal research because of their long track record of use (165 years) and exemplary safety record. They were also exempt from the over the counter drug review by the FDA. Expiration dates on homeopathic medicines are optional and depend on the starting substances ability to remain chemically stable. The official ways to manufacture and dispense homeopathic medicines are updated by the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia Convention of the US, a non profit professional organization dedicated to homeopathy.

Look  into the modern medicine cabinet and you will likely find plastic bottles of medicines that are for prescription or over the counter drugs . The over the counter drugs are not paid for by your  medical insurance but you bought them to help treat a  disease you got and diagnosed yourself. This disease often lasts only a week and could  be helped by herbs too. Since most people do not know how to use herbs safely  when they are ill, they often choose to use homeopathic medicines because they are safe and fairly easy to use and take. Better results with homeopathic medicines happen when the medicine is individualized to the persons expression of illness.

Homeopathic medicines are mostly made from plants and minerals and are very safe and easy to use for all members of the household. Homeopathic drugs are  determined to be safe and effective by the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia Convention of the United States  . Homeopathic medicines are regulated but not reviewed by the FDA. Homeopathic drugs are very affordable and available in many pharmacies and natural grocery stores plus online too. Families worldwide have been using  homeopathic medicines  for over 200 years and sharing their experiences.

Most all our  common herbal remedies have been made into official homeopathic drugs. Most homeopathic medicines have  a long shelf life with an optional expiration date, are extremely safe to take , taste good,  are easy to take for all ages and are equally affordable when compared to the common over the counter chemical drugs. Homeopathic medications are labeled in Latin worldwide and indications are chosen for the individuals response to the illness, not just for a diagnosis unless it is a combination homeopathic product.

Homeopathic medicines are not food but the making of homeopathic drugs is similar to the way our body processes food. Pharmaceutical companies or pharmacists who want to make a homeopathic drug from an herb like Chamomile, start by identifying the plant very carefully.  They use good manufacturing procedures and keep records for FDA inspections on each batch of homeopathic drug that is made. Each drug may have a National Drug Code number to identify the drug and is always labeled in Latin, Chamomilla, the official drug name in HPUS.

The manufacturer often consults a botanist and also  may use modern chemical analysis by liquid chromatography to fingerprint the plants identity. After the plant is cleaned and then chopped or ground up similar to what our teeth do with the food we eat, then the chopped plant is usually soaked in water mixed in specific percentages of drinking alcohol to extract the plant’s healing properties. The liquid alcohol with the plant parts is then filtered and the alcohol acts in the solution to preserve it. This is called the mother tincture of the plant or potency 1.

Then to activate the medicine, the plant solution is shaken after a specific amount of water  is added.  This shaking is similar to how our food diluted in our stomach juices and saliva is under the influence of kinetic energy from our constantly beating heart which effects the stomach contents.  And our friendly bacteria in our intestines make alcohol  equivalent to one drink a day plus water goes in and out in the process of digestion. Homeopathic medicines for over the counter use are very dilute with the number of molecules  in each dose being similar to the concentration of many of our natural hormones circulating in our body…very tiny amounts which can stimulate the body and mind on many different levels.

Finally after 6 or more shaking and dilutions, the homeopathic medicine is mixed with sugar pellets  or mixed into lactose powder and magnesium stearate lubricating powder and formed into tablets which are put into plastic or glass containers, sealed and labeled with the official Latin name of the homeopathic drug. All active and inactive ingredients are listed on the label plus conditions for drug use.

When “Made according to the HPUS” is on the drug label, this means this drug is an official homeopathic drug that is monographed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. Indications for use must be on the label when it is sold for OTC use. Some homeopathic medicines are prescription only when they have indications for diagnosis that can only be made by medical doctors like heart disease or epilepsy, etc. All injectable homeopathic medicines are on prescription and are called a legend drug by FDA. Most homeopathic medicines sold in the US are for over the counter use.

Common strengths of a homeopathic medicine are 6X or 12C or 30 C or 200C. The X means decimal and  it was diluted 1 part of plant tincture  into 9 parts of pure water. The C means centesimal and  the plant was diluted 1 part of plant tincture into 99 parts of pure water. The LM means a 1 to 50,000 dilution. The 200, 6 or 12 mean how many times the drug was shaken and diluted, which is called succussion. This is the special way homeopathic medicines have been made worldwide and in the USA since the early 1800’s.

Critics  of homeopathy say that when drugs are shaken and diluted past 12 C or 24X there are no remaining molecules left to act like a drug and one is selling plain water acting only as a placebo. This would be true from a purely chemical perspective.  But from clinical experience gathered by doctors for centuries, these homeopathic drugs without molecules are acting on patients who are healing from serious diseases. Not enough research has been done to see how these diluted and shaken drugs react in the body. The water is key and  must be changed some how by the initial drug molecules and retains healing properties even if it is so very diluted and has no more molecules. Doctors  have not been able to exactly show by research how homeopathic medicines act with our currently available physics and chemistry tools but more and more research is being done.

New information about taking -Tylenol acetaminophen in Pregnancy

“Research suggests Pregnant Mothers taking Acetaminophen Linked to Behavioral Problems in Children. This medical research was published online Feb 24, 2014 in JAMA Pediatrics.

Dr. Olsen and colleagues analyzed data on 64,322 children and their mothers enrolled in the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996 – 2002). Acetaminophen use during pregnancy was assessed during pregnancy and 6 months after childbirth.

More than half of the women (56%) reporting using acetaminophen during pregnancy. Children with prenatal exposure to acetaminophen were at higher risk of being diagnosed with HKDs, using ADHD medications, or having ADHD-like behaviors.

Human fetuses exposed to acetaminophen ― a drug considered safe in pregnancy but which crosses the placental barrier ― may raise the risk for behavioral problems in children, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and hyperkinetic disorder (HKD), a severe form of ADHD, the research suggests.Acetaminophen can cross the placenta barrier, and recent studies have suggested that maternal use of acetaminophen increases the risk for cryptorchidism in boys, owing to its endocrine-disrupting properties, the investigators note in their article.

“Maternal hormones, such as sex hormones and thyroid hormones, play critical roles in regulating fetal brain development, and it is possible that acetaminophen may interrupt brain development by interfering with maternal hormones or via neurotoxicity such as the induction of oxidative stress that can cause neuronal death,” the researchers write.

Because millions of moms take acetaminophen for pain or fever during their pregnancies and because hyperactivity and attention problems  and undescended testicles are so frequent in children these results are of public health relevance. These findings should inspire more research and most important a very cautious use of acetaminophen during pregnancy.”

Non toxic solutions for pain and fever should be tried first and acetaminophen taken only when really needed during pregnancy. I do not agree with the authors that no change should be made yet in recommending acetaminophen in pregnancy because more research is needed and someone needs to replicate their study.  Why wait? Just use other treatments that are less toxic or non toxic.

“The results did not appear to be confounded by maternal inflammation or infection during pregnancy, mother’s mental health problems, or any of a number of other factors evaluated, the investigators report. However, they add that they cannot rule out residual confounding by genetic factors, unmeasured maternal psychopathology, exposure to other medications, or indication for drug use.”

So interpret with caution these results. Hopefully more research will be done to see if acetaminophen  will be declared unsafe in pregnancy. So now precaution when you take potentially toxic drugs like acetaminophen during pregnancy because it could interfere with your babies hormones. Personally I would opt for non toxic homeopathic medicines in the 30 x or 30 C dosage which are OTC and have indications for fever and pain and other common ills.
